چکیده

The N/N ratio for N2 in the atmosphere of Titan was recently measured to be a factor of 2 higher than the corresponding ratio for HCN. Using a one-dimensional photochemical model with transport, we incorporate new isotopic photoabsorption and photodissociation cross sections of N2, computed quantum-mechanically, and show that the difference in the ratio of N/N between N2 and HCN can be explained primarily by the photolytic fractionation of NN and N N. The [HCN]/[HCN] ratio produced by N2 photolysis alone is 23. This value, together with the observed ratio, constrains the flux of atomic nitrogen input from the top of the atmosphere to be in the range atoms cm s . 9 2 1 (1–2) # 10 Subject headings: atmospheric effects — methods: numerical — molecular processes — planetary systems — planets and satellites: individual (Titan) — radiative transfer

Formation of nitrogenated organic aerosols in the Titan upper atmosphere.

Many aspects of the nitrogen fixation process by photochemistry in the Titan atmosphere are not fully understood. The recent Cassini mission revealed organic aerosol formation in the upper atmosphere of Titan. It is not clear, however, how much and by what mechanism nitrogen is incorporated in Titan's organic aerosols. Using tunable synchrotron radiation at the Advanced Light Source, we demonst...

The Nitrogen Chemistry of Titan’s Upper Atmosphere Revealed

Titan’s atmosphere is unique because dissociation of N2 and CH4, the primary atmospheric constituents, provides the H, C, and N atoms necessary for the synthesis of complex organic molecules. The first steps in the synthesis of organic molecules occur in the upper atmosphere where energetic photons and electrons dissociate N2 and CH 4. We determine the abundance of a suite of nitrogen-bearing m...

Atmospheric Chemistry of Titan : Ab Initio Study of the Reaction between Nitrogen Atoms and Methyl Radicals

Ab initio calculations were performed on the reaction N + CH3 products. Optimized geometries have been calculated for all reactants, transition states, and products at the MP2/6-31G1* level. Barriers and heats of reaction have been estimated by fourth-order Mdler-Plesset perturbation theory with spin projection (PMP4(SDTQ)). Harmonic vibrational frequencies and zero-point energy corrections wer...

Neutral production of hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) in Titan’s upper atmosphere

Aims. Following the first detection of hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) in Titan’s atmosphere, we have devised a new neutral chemical scheme for hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and HNC in the upper atmosphere of Titan. Methods. Our updated chemical scheme contains 137 compounds (with C, H, O and N elements) and 788 reactions (including 91 photolysis processes). To improve the chemistry of HNC and HCN, a carefu...
